Nathan Stewart works from his studio in the Kootenays, British Columbia. Born in Haida Gwaii on the west coast of Canada and raised on the east coast in rural Nova Scotia. He graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2005, with a certificate in Visual Arts, a diploma in Graphic Design and a diploma in Metal Arts/ Jewelry.
After graduating he moved to Montreal and started his own interior painting business, which included painting murals as well as decorative and faux painting. He had a jewelry studio in his basement where he worked on commissions and participated in local markets selling his work. Nathan also followed his ongoing "self teaching" passion for traditional drawing, illustration, painting and commissioned pieces for customers. But he soon followed his calling to the mountains of British Columbia.
Currently, Nathan is part owner of an eco clothing line called Sea of Wolves. In partnership with his wife Catherine they design and produce all the bamboo clothing locally in there studio/factory based in Nelson B.C. Nathan creates all the art and designs for screen printing and prints each garment individually.
Nathan works primarily in acrylic but also uses oil, watercolor, pen, ink and pencil. His inspiration comes from the natural world and all that it contains. He can be found hiking in the mountains tracking animals, taking pictures and seeing them in their natural environment. Or hiking streams with fly rod in hand with hopes of catching fish but mainly to indulge in the tranquility of nature. Although the subject matter for his paintings varies he continues to be drawn to wildlife and nature, which has always been a consistent interest and passion of his. Through his art he would like to bring attention to our delicate natural world and to help us understand how important it is to all of us.
